LONDON GAZETTE, April 7, 1764 A ftpg. report from Westminster says that the: "...King came to the House of Peers, and being in his Royal Robes seated on the Throne with the usual Solemnity....The Commons being come thither accordingly, His Majesty was please to give the Royal Assent to, An Act for granting certain Duties in the British Colonies, and Plantations in America; for continuing...and making perpetual, an Act passed in the Sixth Year of the Reign of King George the Second, (intituled, an Act for the better Securing and encouraging the trade of His Majesty's Sugar Colonies in America;) for applying the Produce of such Duties...towards defraying the Expences of defending, protecting and securing the said Colonies and Plantations...".
This act was significant because it marked the end of Britain's commercial relationship with the colonies and instituted a policy for raising money to pay off the war debt from the French and Indian War. Great to have this report in a British newspaper.
Measures 11 1/2 by 7 1/2, 8 pgs., in good condition.
