October 22, 1845

NEW YORK HERALD, October 22, 1845 This is the gem issue which has been the desire of serious baseball collectors for some time. Page 2 contains a seemingly insignificant report of a baseball game played the day before, the text reading: "Base Ball Match-- A very closely contested match at this well known and old fashioned game took place yesterday at Hoboken between nine Brooklyn men and nine New Yorkers. We were informed last evening that the Brooklynites were the victors." This is, however, one of the earliest references to be had in any newspaper of a bona fide baseball game having been played and as such becomes a keystone issue for any collection of early baseball memorabilia.  The report falls under the heading "Brooklyn Intelligence". You get the complete 4 page issue which is in very nice, clean condition with several binding holes at the blank spine margin not affecting any text. A very rare opportunity for a very rare item!
