July 11, 1768

THE NEW YORK GAZETTE & WEEKLY MERCURY, July 11, 1768.

* Samuel Adams circular letter
* Great masthead
* Colonial New York

Pg. 2 has a "Message" from the Massachusetts Assembly to the governor in response to Lord Hillsborough's order to all the colonial governors to denounce the famous Massachusetts circular letter which was written by Samuel Adams in protest of the Townshend Acts. He also asked the governor to prevent its endorsement & to dissolve any assemblies that refused to withdraw endorsement. The "Message", which is quite lengthy, states the position of the Assembly rather clearly with: "...That we should...rescind the Resolution of the last House to transmit circular letters to the other British colonies...We have most diligently revised not only said resolution, but also the circular letter written & sent in consequence thereof, and after all, they both appear to us to be conceived in terms not only prudent & moderate in themselves, but respectful to the authority of...the Parliament..." Much more of this sentiment, but with continued defiance as well with: "The circular letters have been sent & many of them have been answered; These answers are now in the public papers; the public, the world must & will judge of the proposals, purposes & answers. We could as well rescind those letters as the Resolves & both would be equally fruitless...". Near the end of the message is: "We take this opportunity faithfully & firmly to represent to your Excellency, that the new Revenue Acts & Measures are not only disagreeable to, but in every view are deemed an insupportable burthen & grievance...by all the Freeholders & other inhabitants of this jurisdiction." Also on this page is a similar response from the Maryland Assembly to a message from Governor Sharpe.  Very handsome & displayable masthead featuring two Indians with a bow & arrow. Complete in 4 pages, never-trimmed margins, in great condition.
