October 28, 1848
THE FLORIDIAN, Tallahassee, Oct. 28, 1848  Nineteenth century newspapers from Florida are uncommon, particularly rare are those from before the Civil War.  The ftpg. has a very interesting & early item concerning Jefferson Davis, well before he would come to more prominence on the national stage as the President of the Southern Confederacy during the Civil War. The article is headed: "Col. Jefferson Davis, Son in Law of Gen. Taylor, and one of the fighting & bleeding heroes of Buena Vista--out for 'Cass and Butler' " "Col. Jefferson Davis at Home--His Speech in This City". Most people were not aware of his heroics during the Mexican War, nor that he was the son-in-law of Zachary Taylor. The ftpg. also has an item headed: "The Contract--Who Is For Us and Who Against Us at The North". Much more on politics on the ftpg. and pgs. 2 & 3 as well including an ad supporting Gen. Lewis Cass for President of the United States. Plus there is much great & early content on the California Gold Rush as well, with half of a ftpg. column taken up with a letter datelined "Monterey, California, July 2, 1848" (see photos). This text carries over to take an entire column on pg. 2 as well, with two additional letters from Monterey concerning the Gold Rush--truly great reading!  The bkpg. is filled with ads including one for "A Negro man named Dick..." who was "Committed to Jail", with various particulars & a small engraving of him (see photo). The ftpg. is evenly foxed, while pgs. 2-4 are not. Generally in very nice condition.
