January 01, 1856

BRITISH WORKMAN AND FRIENDS OF THE SONS OF TOIL, London, (1856) This is issue #1, the very first published. The early issues were not dated but based on the first dated issue, #30 of June 1, 1857, this is likely from late in 1856. This is a fascinating paper which--as is noted at the top of the first column--began to "...promote the health, wealth, & happiness of the working classes." It carries a terrific masthead with graphic representation of working men. The ftpg. has a print captioned: "The Loaf Lecture". A few other prints on pgs. 2-4 as well. Tabloid-size and in excellent condition. A rarely found title.
