November 09, 1779
THE PENNSYLVANIA PACKET, Philadelphia, November 9, 1779 The entire front page, some of page 2, and most of page 4 are taken up with part one of a continued report which is prefaced with: "A Narrative of Col. Ethan Allen's Captivity, from the time of his being taken by the British near Montreal, on the 25th day of September, 1775, to the time of his exchange on the 6th day of May, 1778..." with more (see).
Included is a half column "Introduction" signed in type by: Ethan Allen (see). This intro begins: "Induced by a sense of duty to my country, and by the application of many of my worthy friends, some of whom are of the first characters, I have concluded to publish the following narrative of the extraordinary scenes of my captivity...". The narrative ends with "to be continued" (see).
Pg. 2 also includes a letter datelined "Camp before Savannah" with some accounts of naval affairs (see for portions). Also reports from Norwich, Providence, and Fishkill.
Pg. 3 contains a nice letter: "...from Major General Gates to the President of Congress, dated Newport..." which begins: "Sir, I have the honour to acquaint your Excellency that this Island was evacuated by the enemy's troops on the night of the 25th instant & the next morning the army under my command took possession of the town of Newport...".
Most of pg. 3 is taken up with ads.
Complete in 4 pgs., there is rubbing to the ftpg. which causes some word loss to the top half of the ftpg., and a few resulting holes cause some word loss to pg. 2 text (see). Save for this wear problem this issue features a decorative masthead and is otherwise in nice condition.
