NEW ORLEANS DAILY CRESCENT, Louisiana, June 24, 1861 Truly Confederate newspapers from New Orleans are very difficult to find, as Admiral Farragut entered the mouth of the Mississippi in mid-April, 1862 and finally took New Orleans on April 28. Shortly thereafter Benjamin Butler moved in and took control of the city, it surrendering without a fight. So "Confederate" issues from New Orleans are limited to those published between Louisiana's secession from the Union on January 26, 1861 and the end of April, 1862, just a brief 15 month period.
There are various items on the front page concerning the Civil War including items headed: "Local Intelligence" "Orleans Artillery Battalion" "Members of the St. James Rifles" "England and the United States" "Mr. Russell in Montgomery" "The War Near Home" "Ship Island Surrounded" "The Sound Blockaded" "Secession of Maryland"and more.
Pg. 2 has additional war-related items plus half of the page is taken up with ads. One of the lengthier ads is headed: "Southern Pacific Railroad--1,000 Slaves Wanted by Hire or by Purchase" (see photos). Pg. 3 is entirely taken up with ads including a full pg. of "Military Notices" (see). The bkpg. is mostly ads although there is some "River Intelligence" which relates to the war. Complete in 4 pgs., bit irregular at the spine from disbinding with some minor loss of a few words. Partially loose at the spine, some discrete archival mends at the edges, otherwise nice.
