NEW ORLEANS DAILY CRESCENT, New Orleans, Louisiana, March 8, 1861

* Confederate title from Civil War

Truly Confederate newspapers from New Orleans are very difficult to find, as Admiral Farragut entered the mouth of the Mississippi in mid-April, 1862 and finally took New Orleans on April 28. Shortly thereafter Benjamin Butler moved in and took control of the city, it surrendering without a fight. So "Confederate" issues from New Orleans are limited to those published between Louisiana's secession from the Union on January 26, 1861 and the end of April, 1862, just a brief 15 month period. This is an issue from five weeks after Louisiana seceded from the Union and a month before the battle of Fort Sumter.

The ftpg. includes reports from the: "Official Journal of the Convention of the State of Louisiana" plus other news of the day under the headings: "Domestic Intelligence" "Local Intelligence" and others, including: "News for Gen. Twiggs" "Explosion of a Gun Factory Boiler..." "Proceedings of the Federal Congress" and more.  The latter heading includes: "...considered the inaugural warlike. He said the seceded states would never come back under any circumstances..." with more.

Other reports give reaction to Lincoln's recent inaugural address, and a ftpg. item: "The Flag Of The South" has nice reading (see). News items on pg. 3 include: "Abolition Misrepresentations" "Talk On Change" and more. Pg. 5 is all ads including a group of slave sale ads with little prints (see photos). Pgs. 6 & 7 are mostly ads, and pg. 8 is a mix of illustrated steamboat ads and various news items. Complete in 8 pgs., folio size, bit irregular at the blank spine margin, some minor edge tears.
