January 31, 1778

THE PENNSYLVANIA LEDGER OR THE PHILADELPHIA MARKET-DAY ADVERTISER, January 31, 1778  This was a strongly Tory (supportive of the British cause) newspaper which began in 1775 and closed shop in May of 1778 when the British evacuated Philadelphia.
The entire front paged is taken up with ads, one of which is for the sale of "COMMON SENSE...Tracing the several causes of the present contests between the Mother Country and her American subjects..." with more (see). A half column on page 2 is a great letter concerning the troubles between America & England, bits including: ...obstacles procrastinate the subduing the Americans immediately...As to a foreign power possessing them in our absence, it is not an affair so easily accomplished...I fancy such a power would be heartily tired of their new subjects, and the subjects of their new masters...and when...peace again taken place, we should find our refractory Colonies convinced that no government is equal to the British, or can, in like manner, protect them... with more (see).
Page 2 also has a lengthy speech of the King of England concerning America. Ink stains near the beginning causes some loss of words but the balance of the article is fine (see photos).
Page 3 is filled with ads as is page 4.
Complete in four pages, ink stains in the top quadrant do deter some, some foxing near the margins, otherwise fine. Not surprisingly, being a Tory newspaper the masthead features an engraving of the Royal coat-of-arms.
