November 22, 1888

ABSOLUTELY GENUINE NEWSPAPER FROM 1888
NOT A REPRINT!

Complete 16 page issue.   A London newspaper reporting on Jack the Ripper!

THE TIMES, London, England, November 22, 1888

  During the last half of 1888 the East End of London, primarily the Whitechapel district, was terrorized by a murderer who came to be known as Jack The Ripper. His infamous & brutal crime spree was reported in newspapers around the world--indeed, most American newspapers from 1888 reported his deeds.

But certainly the very best newspaper to find such reports would be from London--and better yet the most prestigious newspaper from the city, THE TIMES. This is that very newspaper.

On page five is a headline titled:

* MURDEROUS OUTRAGE in WHITECHAPEL

which is a great detailed report on the attack of a prostitute by the name of Annie Farmer This report is shown in the photos which takes up about a 1/2 of a column. Interesting reading from the time of the famous murders where it was happening.

As Wikipedia notes: Annie Farmer, born in 1848, reportedly was the victim of an attack on November 21, 1888. She survived with only a superficial cut on her throat, apparently caused by a blunt knife. Police suspected that the wound was self-inflicted and did not investigate the case further.

One can imagine what the person thought who originally owned this newspaper 120 years ago when they read for the first time of yet another attack in the Whitechapel section of their city.

Other news of the day throuhgout.

Holding this newspaper is literally holding history in your hands! This newspaper was owned by someone who read the events of the day in 1888, the same as we can now do 120 years later.

How has such an issue survived thru the years?
This issue was kept by a library in a bound volume since 1888 along with other issues of the same year, used by patrons and safely stored. We purchased this issue from a library and now make it available--once again--to the general public.

This newspaper is in remarkably nice condition. It is complete with all 16 pages. There is just a slight bit of very light browning at the margins with some minor margin wear, otherwise good.

Our eBay Store tells much about our 31 years of experience in the sale of rare newspapers. Every item we sell is absolutely genuine.
