January 23, 1858
PORTER'S SPIRIT OF THE TIMES, New York, January 23, 1858.
* Baseball
* Chess
As noted in the masthead: "A Chronicle of the Turf, Field Sports, Literature and the Stage", this is a volume 1 issue of a very early sporting publication. Near the front of the issue is a report headed: "Base-Ball Correspondence No. 14", which regards Americans apparent lack of interest in cricket. This is quite an early/unique report for baseball, as any baseball reports before the Civil War are very uncommon.
This issue also has other sporting reports including boxing (Fistiana), Equestrianism, cricket, chess, & horseracing. Complete in 16 pages, an ornate sports-themed masthead can also be found on the front page. Although in good condition, this issue does contain a small tear on page 325, which measures approximately 1.5 inches. Additionally, some generally dirtiness can be found throughout.
