THE AMERICAN MAGAZINE, (Boston), February, 1746.
* Very rare American magazine
* 1st successful magazine in America
* Samuel Adams
This is a very rare title, actually the first "successful" magazine in American history although it only lasted for about 3 years.
But two previous attempts at a magazine in the colonies only lasted for a few issues--one published by Ben Franklin.
The content & format is much like similar publications in London with various political discussions and an "Historical Chronicle" near the back with news of the day from Europe & Boston.
Included under the "Boston" heading, and on the back page, is a brief item noting:
* Henry Sewall, Esq., Samuel Adams, Esq., and William Stoddard, Esq., to be Justices of the Peace for the county of Suffolk
This is the earliest mention of Sam Adams we have found in a periodical.
There are other American reports as well (see photos).
Complete in 48 pages, bound without a full title/index page. Just a bit of foxing, generally in very nice, clean condition on relatively thick-stock paper. Measures about 5 1/4 by 8 inches. A very rare opportunity for an extremely scarce magazine.
