THE CONNECTICUT COURANT, Hartford, Feb. 9, 1789 This is America's oldest continually published newspaper having been founded in 1764 & still publishing today, as the Hartford Courant. Pg. 2 reporting from New York begins: "Tuesday the 27th ult. the House of Assembly went into a committee on the bill for appointing Electors to chuse a President and Vice President of the United States..." with more (see photos). A report from Boston begins: "...in pursuance of the Constitution of the United States...the ten Electors of President and Vice President of the United States met at the Senate Chamber in this Town, when they unanimously made choice of his Excellency George Washington, Esq. of Virginia and his Excellency John Adams, Esq. of Massachusetts for President and Vice President of the United States.". A similar election report is under the heading of "Hartford" & includes: "...pursuance of the Resolve of Congress for the organization of the new Constitution...Gentlemen who were appointed Electors of the President of the United States, met...and gave in their votes for the following Gentlemen--His Excellency George Washington, Esq. who had seven--His Excellency John Adams, Esq. who had five, and his Excellency Samuel Huntington, Esq. who had two."
