July 14, 1757
THE PENNSYLVANIA GAZETTE, Philadelphia, July 14, 1757.
* Original Benjamin Franklin colonial issue
* 18th century Philadelphia PA
A quite early colonial newspaper published by none other than the world famous Benjamin Franklin, although the "advertising leaf" which appeared with this issue, and upon which was the imprint of "B. Franklin", is not here as it was typically not bound with the issue since it carried only ads.
The front page is entirely taken up with news reports from Europe carrying over to pg. 2.
Page 3 has reports from Annapolis, Halifax, Boston, New York, and Philadelphia including content on the French & Indian War.
Some bits include: "...an account...one man was killed & scalped by the enemy & another shot through the belly but he made his escape...The person killed was shot as he was standing at his own door & a boy and a girl carried away into captivity." and "...a French prisoner was brought into Albany, taken on Sunday...near Crown Point by a party of Mohawk Indians...that Crown Point is garrisoned by only 200 men, that the French have 3 battalions of regular troops, a few Canadians & Indians at Ticonderoga..." and "...'Tis reported in town that a skirmish has happened at Lake George between a party of our people & about 400 French & Indians..." and even more, too much to mention here.
The photos below show much of this content.
The back page is entirely taken up with ads. A photocopy of the page from the book "Benjamin Franklin's Philadelphia Printing" is included, verifying this issue was printed by Ben Franklin.
Four pages, nice engraving of a coat-of-arms in the masthead, never bound nor trimmed (desirable), some wear & minor tears at the margins, otherwise nice. A great opportunity for a newspaper owned & printed by Ben Franklin without the much higher price commanded by issues with the imprint.
