DAILY AMERICAN SENTINEL, New York, October 28, 1846
* Rare Native American title
Here is a newspaper that supported the "Native American Cause" as indicated by the mission statement on page 2 that concludes: "Let Native Americans all over the country unite, and they can crush this enemy--FOREIGN INFLUENCE--that he will never raise his head again, in the land of the free and the home of the brave. Let there be no delay. Every moment is valuable to the cause of Liberty"
Obviously the "Native Americanism" expressed here does not refer to the American Indian, but to white folks born in America. Their political and social issues, we suspect, were probably similar to the those of the American or "Know-Nothing" Party. In fact, this "cause" may have been the forerunner of the movement that spawned the American or "Know-Nothing" Party.
Notable content includes, on page 2, a list of the "Native American Nominations" for various state and local offices. Has other political-related content as well.
In the masthead is a quote attributed to a gentleman named George Shifler: "By My Country's Flag, I'll Live or Die."
This is a volume I issue (number 3) of this rare title that, according to Gregory's "Union List of American Newspapers", shows no holdings by any American institutions. In fact, the title is not listed.
Folio-size, 4 pages, the front page has an area of lite staining in the text, and bit of lite fold rubbing, first leaf has a few creases and some minor wrinkling.
