THE NEW YORK TIMES, from New York, dated April 5, 1870
* First African-American to vote under the 15th Amendment
Page 3 contains an inconspicuous yet exceedingly significant report, noting the first Black man to vote in an election in the United States following the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment.
He name was Thomas Munday Peterson, with the report headed:
"First Vote Cast by Colored Men Under the Fifteenth Amendment"
The text reads in its entirety (see photos):
"The honor of first permitting colored men to vote under the Fifteenth Amendment is claimed by the little town of Perth Amboy, N.J. On Thursday last, 31st ult., at a special charter election in that city, two colored men, Thos. Munday and a coachman of Marcus Spring, Esq., cast their votes and had them allowed. Perth Amboy is strongly Democratic and usually gives a majority of forth on that side."
This "historic first" claim is substantiated by several reports on the web including two found in Wikipedia.
This report would likely not be found outside the metro New York area as Perth Amboy is a New York City suburb. A very rare & timely item with great historical significance.
