THE FLORIDIAN & JOURNAL, Tallahassee, Florida, June 30, 1849
* Rare pre civil war title form the deep South
* President James K. Polk death
On page 2 at the top of the first column is a "Proclamation" announcing the death of James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States. Issued by the first governor of Florida, William D. Moseley, the Proclamation states, in part:
* James K. Polk, late President of the United States, died at Nashville on the 15th instant. It is not inappropriate that the...announcement should be made by the Executive of Florida to the people of the State....In consideration of...the ...position which he so lately held, together with the purity and virtues of his private life, it is...recommended to the people of Florida to testify in a becoming manner their respect for the memory of the late Ex-President
The Proclamation is signed in type: W. D. Moseley.
Hereafter are two related reports: "Death of Ex-President Polk" & "Illness and Death of Mr. Polk. Top and bottom of this content are black-bordered in recognition of Polk's death.
Perimeters of pages 2 & 3 are also black-bordered. Nice to have in this uncommon title from the capital of Florida, just a few years after she became a state.
Also nice to have in a title from the South, because Polk was a son of the South, born in North Carolina, and raised in Tennessee. Nice coverage in comparison to many other papers we've had with Polk's death, especially with the mourning rules.
Other news of the day. A volume I issue (number 26). Large area of damp-staining in the upper half, some in this content, second leaf has a small, v-shaped piece missing at the spine.
