* Denmark Vesey Followers Executed
* Slave Insurrection Leader
Page 2 has a report about the execution of some of the individuals involved in the famous plot for a massive slave insurrection organized by Denmark Vesey. Says in part that "...twenty-two culprits, were executed here for attempts to excite the late insurrection in this city and State. Six other Slaves were found guilty...and sentenced to be hung on the 30th inst..."
A notable report relating to what might be considered the second most famous slave insurrection other than Nat Turners Rebellion, despite the fact that the Vesey insurrection never came to pass.
Other news of the day with advertisements throughout. 4 pages in good condition.
wikipedia notes: Denmark Vesey (originally Telemaque, 1767? July 2, 1822) was an African American slave, and later a freeman, who planned what would have been one of the largest slave rebellions in the United States had word of the plans not been leaked. City authorities arrested the plot's leaders before the uprising could begin, and Vesey and others were tried and executed.
Eventually, many antislavery activists came to regard Vesey as a hero. During the American Civil War, abolitionist Frederick Douglass used Vesey's name as a battle cry to rally African-American regiments, especially the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
