CONNECTICUT JOURNAL, New Haven, February 20, 1800 Page 2 has: "The Will Of Gen. George Washington. In The Name Of God Amen." The will, which is predictably quite detailed, takes more than 2 1/2 columns on pg. 2, plus another column and a bit more on pg. 3, begins: "I, George Washington, of Mount-Vernon, a Citizen of the United States and lately President of the same, DO make, ordain, and declare this instrument, which is written with my own Hand, and every page thereof subscribed with my name, to be my last Will and TESTAMENT, revoking all others---Imprimis..." & of course, much more (see for portions).
As one might expect most of his assets, possessions, slaves, etc., were bequeathed to his wife and various relatives, but also to a few institutions. In his will Washington also stipulates that a new family vault be built due to the deteriorating condition of the existing one. He closes by appointing his wife and several other relatives "...Executrix and Executors of this WILL and TESTAMENT...", plus a few other details. The will is signed in type: George Washington. There is a footnote from the editor at the end stating that the schedule of property in the will was excluded and will appear in the next issue.
Complete in 4 pages, has four large areas of damp staining, some in the text of the will, there is a vertical row of several small holes in unrelated content on each leaf, has a hole a bit smaller than a dime at the fold juncture that causes loss of about ten words in the will, otherwise in good, untrimmed condition.
