June 10, 1734

THE NEW-YORK WEEKLY JOURNAL, June 10, 1734  This is the very rare & early newspaper printed by John Peter Zenger who, a bit later in this same year was arrested for the critical comments he made in his newspaper about a decision made by the British Governor of New York. The result was a famous libel case in which Zenger was acquitted, the argument being that he had printed the truth and that truth is not libelous. It was--and still is--considered a landmark decision in establishing freedom of the press in America.
The contents of the issue are of much less significance that the title itself, as newspapers from such an early date in colonial America are exceedingly rare, and the added significance of being a John Peter Zenger issue enhances its appeal. The photos below show much of the content, which is varied in topic, with political & other items discussed.
Most of page 4 is taken up with advertisements, and at the bottom of the page is the imprint noting the newspaper is: "Printed and Sold by John Peter Zenger..." (see).
Complete as a four page issue, measuring 7 by 11 inches, and in very nice, clean condition.
