March 14, 1693
ATHENIAN MERCURY, London, England, dated March 14, 1693 This was a fine gentlemen's newspaper which was very popular in the coffeehouses of early England. Interesting reading on a wide range of topics. A very early English periodical now over 300 years old.
This newspaper was done in question/answer format. Among the questions are: "If there be any such Creatures as Pigmies, where do they dwell?" and "If Polygamy were again introduc'd, whether woul'd it bring more trouble or pleasure to mankind?" and "Whether it be likely the World should end by a general Conflagration, and when?" among many others. There are answers for each. Some fascinating reading!
This newspaper was published at a time when there weren't any newspapers in all of the American colonies. A single sheet newspaper printed on both sides (typical for the period), measuring about 7 1/2 by 12 1/2 inches. Very nice, clean condition printed on high-quality, cloth-based newsprint.
