THE TIMES, London, England, September 29, 1888
* Jack the Ripper
* Whitechapel murders
The "Jack the Ripper" hysteria was rampant in London during the fall of 1888 with the news making most of the major newspapers in America as well. But the most desired newspaper for "Ripper" reports would have to be the Times of London.
Page 4 has a related items, with several letters concerning the crime in the East End of London (where the murders occurred), including: "...among other means for dealing with the lawless life of criminal districts that responsible persons should buy up the property & as landlords enforce decency..." and "...first step needful is the prosecution of the landlords of these rookeries of crime for keeping disorderly houses..." and more (see photos).
Page 6 has a brief report with small head: "The Whitechapel Murder" includes: "...John Fitzgerald...who has been detained...on his own confession with having murdered Annie Chapman...has been liberated, exhaustive inquiries having proved his statement to be entirely unfounded." with a bit more (see).
Complete in 12 pages, various chipping at the margins but very little loss of text, mostly just blank margin. Edge tears typical with such a newspaper of this era which is fragile due to the quality of paper used. Should be handled carefully.
