June 19, 1936

THE NEW YORK TIMES, New York, June 19, 1936

* Lucky Luciano luck ends
* New York City gangster sentenced
* Joe Louis vs. Max Schmeling

This 44 page newspaper has one column headlines on the front page that include: "LUCIANA SENTENCED TO 30 TO 50 YEARS; COURT WARNS RING" "Retaliation Against Witnesses Will Result in Maximum Terms, McCook Says" "GANG GOES TO SING SING" and more. reporting continues inside with loads of text. Too much to photograph here. Great to have in this famous NYC title.

Also page 24 has reporting of the upcoming fight between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling. They would fight on this day and Schmeling would pull off the upset. Related photo here as well.

Other news of the day throughout. Rag edition in very nice condition save for minor spine wear.

wikipedia notes: Dewey's efforts succeeded in Luciano being convicted on charges as leader of one of the largest prostitution rings in American history in 1936 and sentenced to 30 to 50 years in prison, along with Dave Betillo and others. Dewey exposed Luciano for lying on the witness stand, through direct quizzing and records of telephone calls; Luciano also had no explanation for why his federal income tax records claimed he made only $22,000 a year, while it was obvious to onlookers that he was a wealthy man.
