August 20, 1861

THE DAILY JOURNAL, Wilmington, North Carolina, August 20, 1861  This was one of just a few newspapers which printed: "Confederate States of America" in the dateline. Pg. 2 has an item beginning: "If it should prove true that the battle of Manassas has virtually secured the recognition of our independent nationality by France...England should join in the actual recognition at an early day...to bringing Lincoln's government into contempt at home..." with more. Pg. 2 also has: "Important Proclamation from President Lincoln" concerning commerce with the Southern states, signed by him in type: Abraham Lincoln (see photos). Other items on pg. 2 include: "North Carolina 14th Regiment Volunteers" "Latest from Fortress Monroe" "General Beauregard of Canadian Descent" 'News from the Potomac" "Vandalism of the Abolition Army" and an interesting item: "The Real Traitors" which begins: "The real traitors who are responsible for the disruption of the American Union & the present civil war are Wm. H. Seward, Abe Lincoln, Hannibal Hamlin..." & several more (see photos).
Perhaps the best item is a back page report headed: "Abe Lincoln Assassinated!--Arrest of the Assassin!!--Great Excitement!!!" which I suspect was fictitious (be sure to see the photo).
Both pages 3 & 4 have some war-related items but are mostly taken up with ads. A bit irregular at the spine margin, but otherwise in very nice condition.
