The first column on the ftpg. has a brief, discrete report: "Jesse James, the train-robber, alluded to elsewhere, is dead from the effects of the shooting in St. Joseph, Mo. Perhaps Jesse don't care much, as there could have been but little satisfaction in leading such a life as he led." (see photo)
Page 4 has a lengthier report, with more editorial comment, headed: "A Shooting an Outlaw--Cowardly Act" which begins: "A brace of miserable cowards, named Charles and Robert Ford, who formerly belonged to the notorious James gang, and were concerned in a number of train robberies...came to St. Joseph, Missouri, the other day for the purpose of arresting Jesse James, their former leader & associate...The skunks, however, were afraid to make the attempt, knowing the desperate courage of James, so they shot him down like a dog, in his own house, sneaking up behind him &^ shooting him in the back of the head...Of course James ought to have been arrested long ago, & it is a good thing that he is now where he can do no further harm, but we never did admire this 'setting a thief to catch a thief'..." with more interesting reading (see photo).
