April 09, 1789

THE NEWPORT HERALD, Newport, Rhode Island, April  9, 1789

* Rare 18th century American title
* re. United States Constitution

Certainly one of the more rare 18th century American titles, and this is among the very last in our inventory. The ftpg. has an interesting letter beginning: "Having no longer a right to use the flag of the United States or to suppose ourselves a part of the union..." with more, concerning Rhode Island being the lone holdout of the original 13 colonies in ratifying the Constitution (finally did in 1791). Inside has reports from Newport, New York, Philadelphia, Charleston, and Wilmington.
Four pages slightly irregular at the spine margin, very nice condition. A newspaper from the founding year of the federal government. Washington would be inaugurated as the first President 3 weeks after this date.
