April 18, 1861
DAILY APPEAL EXTRA, Memphis, Tennessee, April 18, 1861 An extremely scarce item, being a broadside edition (printed on one side only) of a newspaper from early in the Confederacy from a city which was only "Confederate" until the battle of Memphis, June 6, 1862, after which it was in Yankee control.
The top of the first column has a nice graphic devise showing a cannon, an American flag with holes, topped by a Confederate flag. The headlines immediately beneath include: "THE WAR NEWS ! " "President Davis to Take Command at Fort Pickens ! " "MISSOURI SOUND ! " "Gov. Harris' Reply to Lincoln ! " Immediately following are various dispatching relating to the early events of the Civil War, one noting: "President Davis has issued his proclamation inviting privateers to make war on northern commerce..." (see). The balance of the front page has various other war-related reports.
Complete as issued as a single sheet broadside edition with the reverse entirely blank. This issue has a transparent archival overlay obviously done by an institution for preservation purposes, causing no loss of readability (see). There are two old tape stain and some other light staining, none of which obscures readability. Some irregularity at the spine margin causes loss to "Pr..." in the "President Davis..." head (see).
A very rare opportunity for a Confederate broadside newspaper from very early in the Civil War.
