THE NEW YORK TIMES, October 6, 1885
* 1st professional Negro baseball league team
* From their inaugural year
A significant issue in the history of Negro League baseball, with a page 2 rather bigoted report on the Cuban Giants. History tells us that the Cuban Giants of New York were the very first salaried professional black baseball team, created this very year of 1885, and the New York Times index notes this is the only 1885 mention of the Cuban Giants.
The report is headed: "The Cuban Giants Beaten" with the text noting: "There was a farcical game of ball at the Polo Grounds yesterday that served to amuse some 600 spectators. A nine of the ebon sons of Africa, running in all coffee shades from black Mocha to cafe au lait, who call themselves Cuban giants, gave a minstrel performance on the diamond..." with more (see).
This is the complete newspaper, some brittleness at the margins, otherwise in good condition. Should be handled with care.
