THE TIMES, London, Sept. 14, 1888 "Jack the Ripper" reports were common in the latter half of 1888, capturing the interest of people on both sides of the Atlantic as evidenced by the reports in many newspapers in the United States. It was the international "sensation" of the era, and a case which was never conclusively solved. Not surprisingly, issues of the respected "Times" newspaper from London are the most sought after, being the primary source for Jack the Ripper reports.
Page 4 has an uncommonly lengthy article headed: "The Whitechapel Murder" taking 1 3/4 columns. Near the beginning is: "...Coroner...resumed his inquiry...Whitechapel road, respecting the death of Annie Chapman, who was found murdered in the back yard...last Saturday morning..." followed by much very detailed testimony (see photos for portions). Annie Chapman is considered the second victim of Jack the Ripper.
Most reports in the Times might be one-third of a column so this account is much lengthier. Complete in 12 pages, a very discrete archival mend across the center of most leaves causing no distraction nor loss, some chipping & minor tears at the blank margins, otherwise very nice.
