* Chicago Black Sox scandal sought
* World Series - major league baseball
The 1919 Major League Baseball World Series remains infamous for the cheating scandal of the Chicago White Sox team in throwing the Series for financial gain. Just two days after the final game the sports page (pg. 17) has this 2 column headline: "$20,000 Reward Is Offered by Comisky for Single Clew That Sox Threw Games". The report notes how the President of the White Sox defended his players: "...would give $20,000 for a single clew to lead to evidence that any of his players had deliberately attempted to throw any of the world series games to the Cincinnati Reds, for, the owner declared, he was sure of the fidelity of the players..." (see photos). The cheating scandal would not be settled for 2 year and even then there was much controversy with several of the players suspended from baseball.
Complete in 22 pages, a bit irregular at the spine margin, minor margin wear, otherwise good. Should be handled with care.
