THE NEW YORK TIMES, June 20, 1864 Although the front page has much reporting on the events of the Civil War, certainly the most notable report is an inconspicuous item on the back page, when essentially announces the creation of what we now know as Arlington National Cemetery.
The report has a small heading: "Gen. Lee's Lands Appropriately Consecrated" with the text noting: "Gen. Robert E. Lee, who commands the army of rebels, is fighting to enslave the black man. In view of this fact, a happy thought has occurred to the Secretary of War, which it gives us pleasure to record. First. He ordered Col. Greene to organize the Freedman's Village for the protection of the black man & his family upon the Arlington estate...That village is a success. Second--He has himself recently selected a site, upon the same estate, for a national cemetery for the burial of loyal soldiers who die in Virginia from wounds inflicted by Lee's orders! Gen. Meigs has been directed to supervise the laying out of the grounds." (see) An extremely historic report. While this account was likely considered of little consequence at the time, it has certainly grown in national significance since 1864.
