July 08, 1863

THE NEW YORK HERALD, July 8, 1863  A great issue not only for the historic content on the capture of Vicksburg, but because it has four Civil War maps. Most of the front page is taken up with two maps, headed: "SURRENDER OF VICKSBURG" and the other: "THE FREEDOM OF THE MISSISSIPPI" with great one column headlines proclaiming the historic victory for the Yankees. It also includes the brief yet notable dispatch signed in type by: D. D. Porter: "I have the honor to inform you that Vicksburg has surrendered to the United States forces on this Fourth of July." (see).
Page 4 has a very small, one column wide map of the Chattanooga vicinity (see), and page 10 has a larger map headed: "The Fight At Williamsport--Scene of the Battle on the Banks of the Potomac..." (see).
Twelve pages, tiny binding holes at the blank spine, a bit close-trimmed at the bottom of the ftpg. only, great condition.
