GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, England, July, 1755 There are no less than two high points in this issue, the first being an article headed: "Gov. Dinwiddie's Speech to the Assembly of Virginia" in which he relates various reports from the French & Indian War, including mention of "...general Braddock, commander in chief of all his majesty's forces on this continent..." and others. There is also a report reading in part: "The poor men who suffered at the meadows with colonel Washington recommend to your favour as they were disabled in the service of their country...". This is very early & rather rare mention of George Washington, when he was just 23 years old.Certainly the other prime feature of this issue is the terrific foldout map titled: "A Map Of the British And French Settlements In North America" which also includes quite a bit of descriptive text (see photos). This is one of the nicest maps of America found within the Gentleman's Magazine. The map is very detailed with the French territory shaded and the British possessions not. It measures 11 by 16 inches, has several folds from having been folded into the magazine (now held separately in an archival folder), and a very minor repair to the blank reverse. A terrific item for display in uncommonly nice, clean condition, rarely found in such nice condition as much tattering & wear is more typical due to 200 years of use.
The very first article in this magazine: "Account of the British Settlements in N. America" which is continued from a previous issue related to this map & takes over 3 1/2 pgs. Another page has an article: "Observations on the Map of America in the Present Magazine"
Among other items of interest in this magazine are: "A Message from his Excellency Arthur Dobbs, Esq., Governor of North Carolina, to the General Assembly held at Newburn... [New Bern]" "A Particular Account of the Death of Mr.. Professor Richmann...who was Killed Whilst he was Making an Electrical Experiment" which also includes two illustrations (see); "Journal of Public Transactions in America" Also an article which begins: "In the instruction given by Somerset County in Virginia to the representatives in the assembly, is the following passage..."
Complete in 48 pages issue, 5 by 8 1/4 inches, with full title/contents page featuring an engraving of St. John's Gate. The issue is in excellent condition. The only plate called for is the map noted above.
A very nice magazine from the late 18th century with a wide range of varied content including news of the day, political reports, literary items, and other unusual tidbits. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
