This is certainly one of the less common titles from the capital of the Confederacy, and this is from quite late in the war as well. The first column has an interesting editorial which begins: "If peace between the North & the South had continued up to this time, what has lately happened in the U.S. Congress would have been enough to produce war..." with much more, & ending with: "...If any citizen of this Confederacy, after the developments of the last week, is willing to submit to the Yankees, we venture to say that he has always been a traitor, & is fit only to be a slave. Of all such the sooner we rid ourselves the better for them and for us." (see photos).
Also on the front page are: "Taxation & Finance", "The Peace Movement" and "Confederate States Congress" with various reports; "The News", "From Petersburg" and other items. Inside pages include: "The African Church Meeting", "General Assembly of Virginia", "Mass Meeting at the African Church--The War Spirit Revived--The Resolutions, Speeches, etc.", "Additional From the United States", "From Petersburg--Results of Tuesday's Fighting--The Enemy Erecting Observatories--Both Sides Strengthening the New Lines", "From South Carolina--Fighting at Blackville, Tues.--The Enemy Near Branchville--The Edisto Bridge Burnt by Our Troops" and other items. Also on page 3 is a: "Proclamation" for a day of thanksgiving & prayer, signed in type by the Confederate President: Jefferson Davis (see photos).
More war-related reporting on the back page as well. Complete as a 4 page newspaper, damp staining to the bottom half does not deter readability, minor worm hole at the bottom margin, generally in very nice condition.
