March 16, 1865

THE DAILY PROGRESS, Raleigh, North Carolina, March 16, 1865

* One of the last strongholds of the Confederacy

Raleigh was one of the last major cities of the South to fall into the hands of Sherman, surrendering on April 13, 1865 just one day before Lincoln was assassinated. This rare Confederate title is from the latter months of the Civil War.
The front page has a "General Order" which begins: "To arm and equip an additional force of cavalry, there is need of carbines, revolvers, pistols, saddles...". Also: "An Act...to Increase the Efficiency of the Home Guard..." and also another General Order, signed in type by: R. E. Lee, General, in which he notes: "...a pardon is announced to such deserters and men improperly absent as shall return to the commands to which they belong within the shortest possible time..." with more (see photo).
The back page has: "Synopsis of the President's Message to Congress" which reflects upon the perilous situation of the Confederacy at this late date in the war (see photo). Other items as well.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper in truly excellent condition.
