April 07, 1865
THE BOSTON HERALD, Massachusetts, April 7, 1865
* General Robert E. Lee's army surrender ?
* Ulysses S. Grant in control
* Civil War end is imminent
Page 2 has some headings concerning the nearing of the end of the Civil War (see photos).
But the back page has some very nice headings that include: "GREAT NEWS", "LEE ATTACKED", "Several Thousand Prisoners Taken", "Large Number Of Cannon Captured", "The Pursuit Of Lee's Runaway's", "THE DESTRUCTION of LEE'S ARMY", "President Lincoln's Visit To Richmond" and more.
Of particular interest are the back page headlines that read: "GLORIOUS !" and "Reported of SURRENDER of GENERAL LEE ! And His Army !!". Brief text includes: "....Lee's Whole Army Is Cornered And Has Surrendered. This Is Positive" A curiosity here as history shows that Lee's army did not officially surrender until April 9th. Where they got this information from will always be a mystery. Still a great item with nice headlines just a few days before the surrender.
Complete in 4 pages, very minor wear at the folds, otherwise in nice condition.
