August 17, 1776
THE EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Edinburgh, Scotland, August 17, 1776 Page two contains an extremely significant paragraph reporting--likely for the first time in this newspaper (the full text of the Declaration of Independence would be in Aug. 21 issue)--that the American colonies had declared for independence from Great Britain: "The Congress on the 4th of July, declared the colonies Independent States. It is said the number of provinces for independency were seven, against it six. Other accounts say that the Congress were unanimous...Be this as it may, the Congress have since declared war in form against Great Britain; so that the hopes of accommodation, agreeable to the powers given to Lord and General Howe, seem now at an end". (see for full text).
Page three carries a report of troops arriving at Staten Island on July 8, beginning: "We have at last landed in this rebellious country..." (see), plus two more reports of the troops landing at Staten Island.
Complete in four pages with some scattered foxing & dirtiness to the front page, otherwise in good condition.
