The back page carries a very significant report on famed fugitive slave Margaret Garner, noting her murdering her own children rather than have them return to slavery. The report is headed: "The Cincinnati Fugitive Slave Case". A portion reports: "...We learn that the mother of the dead child acknowledges she killed it, and that her determination was to have killed all the children and then destroyed herself rather than return to slavery. She & the others complain of cruel treatment on the part of the master..." and a bit further on: "...testified that the mother, when she saw they would be captured, caught up a butcher knife and ran to the children, saying she would kill them rather than to have them return to slavery, & cut the throat of the child..." and later mentioned her by name: Margaret Garner (see). See the hyperlink for more on Margaret Garner and also see our Harper's Weekly issue #173094 which features a print and article on her.
This famous story of fugitive slave Margaret Garner was the inspiration for the novel "Beloved" by author Toni Morrison, and was later adapted to a movie by the same name, starring Oprah Winfrey. The back page reports "The Cincinnati Fugitive Slave Case". Rarely did period newspapers report the details of the incident as noted here, and rarely was she mentioned by name.
Complete in 8 pages, slight irregular left spine, some tiny edge tears, scattered lite foxing, otherwise in good condition.
