June 28, 1945

THE TOPEKA DAILY CAPITAL, Kansas, June 28, 1945

* USS Bunker Hill - Essex-class aircraft carrier
* Invasion of Okinawa - Kamikazes attack

This 12 page newspaper has a three column headline on the front page: "Mitscher's Flagship, Carrier Bunker Hill, Blasted and Set Afire by Jap Suicide Planes, To Port Under Own Power; 656 Casualties" with two related photos (see photos).

1st report coverage on the Japanese kamikaze attacks on the USS Bunker Hill during the invasion of Okinawa. Reporting on many disasters such as this were kept from the public, sometimes for many months, until the family members of the killed were all notified, giving the reason for this late report. Still a first report.

Other news, sports and advertisements of the day with much on World War II. A few small binding holes along the spine, otherwise nice.
