June 23, 1813
COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, June 23, 1813 Page 2 has a report: "The War In Canada - Lower Canada--British Account" which is followed by: "American Accounts" which has a letter signed by: H. Dearborn. This is concerning the battle at Stoney Creek near Hamilton, Ontario (see). The rest of the column has additional reporting concerning the War of 1812. Elsewhere on pg. 2 is: "Chesapeake Frigate" which has brief details noting in part: "...The Chesapeake, all agree, was bravely defended until disabled & that no honor was lost...the following officers as being dead: Captain Lawrence..." with a bit more. This is followed by another letter with more details concerning the battle between the Shannon & the Chesapeake & the funeral details for Capt. Lawrence (see). Included in the report is mention of his famous quote, one of the more notable utterances in U.S. military history: "...and the ships were both brought in by very young officers. Capt. Broke was considered as very dangerously wounded...When Capt. Lawrence could speak, he would say, 'Don't give up the ship.' He was first wounded in the leg which bled much..." with more (see).
Over the last 35 years we have found several newspapers which printed this famous quote but this is the earliest appearance we have ever found in a newspaper.
Four pages, bit of light dirtiness to the front page, very nice condition.
