THE WHEELING INTELLIGENCER, West Virginia, Nov. 28, 1889
* Hatfield - McCoy hillbilly feud
* Devil Anse Hatfield tells his family's story
Over 2 columns on the front page are taken up with some of the most detailed coverage we have seen in a period newspaper concerning the legendary Hatfield-McCoy feud at the border of Kentucky & West Virginia. Perhaps it is not surprising to find such lengthy content in a newspaper from West Virginia.
The top of the front page has one column heads: "DEVIL ANSE" "Tells The True History" "Of The Famous Hatfield-McCoy Feud to an Intelligencer Representative" "And Puts His Mark to the Statement When Read to Him" "A Very Thrilling Recital" "The Famous Head of the Hatfield Family Not So Black as Painted" "By Sensational Reporters--How Marshal White Got His Consent to go to Charleston--A Conspiracy by Kentucky Detectives Frustrated by the Court".
The article begins: "One of the greatest sensations Charleston has experienced for many years was created night before last when the word was passed around that 'Devil Anse' Hatfield, the chief of the Hatfield vendetta of Logan county, this state, and a part of his gang were in the city..." with much more.
But the most noteworthy content is when Devil Anse tells his family's story to this newspaper's reporter (see). It is very lengthy, and it its conclusion he signs the state with an "X" between his first and last name: Anderson Hatfield. Much more follows as well (see).
Additionally, page 2 has a fried editorial item headed: "Devil Anse Hatfield's Story" (see).
This is the front leaf of a 2 leaf newspaper, the back leaf being missing. An archival repair to some loss at the top of the last column, not affecting the mentioned content. Otherwise large folio size and in nice condition with foxing in the last column.
