THE DETROIT FREE PRESS, Michigan, Feb. 1, 1888
* Great issue on the Hatfield-McCoy feud
* Early reporting - hard to find
* Soon after the battle of Grapevine Creek
Page 3 has a terrific & very detailed report on the infamous Hatfield-McCoy feud in West Virginia & Kentucky, taking over a full column. The heads include: "WRITTEN IN BLOOD" "The Harrowing History of the Hatfield-McCoy Vendetta" "Diabolical Work Of Cowardly Assassins" "Men and Women Shot Down or Brutally Beaten to Death" "Families Living in Deadly Terror Till the Bullet Ends Their Fears". What follows is a very nice & detailed historical account of the feud through the years including mention of the principal family members involved, such as "Devil Anse" Hatfield, Paul McCoy, Randall McCoy, and many others (see).
Included within the report is a nice account of the famous New Year's Day massacre of 1888, which was just one month prior to the date of this newspaper. It notes in part: "...The crowning piece of deviltry was reserved for the night of January 1, 1888, when 13 of the Hatfield gang, headed by James Vance, surrounded the Paul McCoy homestead...burned the house with its contents, killed his son and daughter, beat the mother on the head with the butt of a gun till they thought she was dead & left little children to die in the cold..." with much more (see).
The main article is followed by another titled: "A Truce Declared" "The Hatfield-McCoy War Has ceased, but only Temporarily--A Report from the Front" (see).
A terrific account and one of the lengthier reports of the Hatfield-McCoy feud to be found in a period newspaper.
Complete in 8 pages, evenly toned, various minor tears at the margins. Must be handled carefully due to its fragility.
