THE WHEELING INTELLIGENCER, West Virginia, Nov. 21, 1889

* 'Devil Anse' Hatfield
* Hatfield-McCoy feud

Nearly half of the first column on the front page is taken up with nice coverage in a period newspaper relating to the legendary Hatfield-McCoy feud at the border of Kentucky & West Virginia. Perhaps it is not surprising to find such content in a newspaper from West Virginia.
The top of the front page has one column heads: " 'DEVIL ANSE' HATFIELD" "Arraigned in the United States Court at Charleston" "He Is Tried And Acquitted" "On a Charge of Violating Revenue Laws and is Offered Government Protection Outside the Lines. A Conspiracy Frustrated" (see). Rather than the content reporting on the actual feud, this article concentrates on "Devil Anse's" arrest (his first ever by an officer of the law) for breaking revenue laws. Bits include: " 'Devil Anse' Hatfield, of Logan Country, of whom so much has been said & written...was taken in charge by the United States authorities for trial on a charge of having violated the Internal Revenue laws. He was tried & acquitted this afternoon...He and his friends were all heavily armed and three deputy marshals accompanied the party to where they left the railroad...'Devil Anse' is a medium sized man, very stoop shouldered...no one would judge from his appearance that he is the blood thirsty villain that imaginative newspaper men have pictured him to be..." with more (see).
Complete in four pages, large folio size, light browning at the margins, nice condition. Great to have this content at the top of the front page.
