April 12, 1968

NEW YORK TIMES, April 12, 1968

* Civil Rights Act - Indian
* Fair Housing
* Signed by president

The top of the first column of the front page has: "President Signs Civil Rights Bill; Pleads For Calm" plus related subheads and a photo of the signing. This was the Civil Rights Bill of 1968 which provided for equal housing opportunities regardless of race, religion or national origin. This is commonly known as the Fair Housing Act. This was enacted during the riots concerning the Martin Luther King assassination, hence the "...Pleads For Calm" note in the headline.
The complete issue, some wear at the right margins otherwise quite nice.
