THE KNOXVILLE NEWS-SENTINEL, Second Extra, Tennessee, Aug. 6, 1945 A nice two line banner headline: "ATOMIC SUPER-BOMB, MADE AT OAK RIDGE, STRIKES JAPAN" also has a third line: "Oak Ridge Has Over 425 Buildings". This might seem like a typical Hiroshima report, but the significance of this issue is that Knoxville is just 18 miles from Oak Ridge.
Oak Ridge was established in the early 1940's as a base for the Manhattan Project, the massive United State government operation that developed the atomic bomb. This also explains who "Oak Ridge" is part of the headline, since it is local to this newspaper.
In the effort by serious collectors to own newspapers from as close to "where it happens" as possible, this could well be the best newspaper for the first use of the atomic bomb outside of a Japanese newspaper.
Other related heads on the front page emphasize the local nature of the bomb's development with "Story of Secret Officially Told - Even Plant Chiefs Didn't Know What Work Others Did" "First Test in Desert Waste Was Blast Beyond Description" "First Atomic Target Was Big Supply Port" and more. There are also two photos headed: "Two Views of Giant Oak Ridge Production Plant"
Complete in 18 pages and in nice condition. A newspaper for the best of collections.
