December 15, 1865

THE LIBERATOR, Boston, Dec. 15, 1865  This is one of the final issues of this famous anti-slavery newspaper as it would cease publication just two issues later. Over half of the ftpg. is taken up with the: "Message Of the President" signed in type: Andrew Johnson. In this address Johnson reflects on the end of the Civil War and also touches on the passage of the 13th Amendment with: "...Now that slavery is at an end, or near its end, the greatness of its evil, in the point of view of public economy, becomes more & more apparent...". Also on the ftpg. is: "Freedom---Citizenship" and "About Negro Insurrection". But the best content is on pg. 2 with the article: "The Amendment" which is concerning the 13th Amendment to the Constitution which abolished slavery. This report notes: "Twenty-seven states have now ratified the Constitutional Amendment abolishing & forever prohibiting slavery in the United States..." and further on is: "The last four 'States' to ratify the Amendment were South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, and Georgia! Tell us not of the marvels & wonders of other days! What prediction, five years ago only, would have been deemed so wild, so improbable, so insane, as the prediction of this fact?..." with more.  What better publication could there be for a report on the passage of the 13th Amendment than this famous anti-slavery newspaper?
A very significant and historic issue. The masthead has the famous slavery-related engraving.
This is complete in four pages with a bit irregular at the spine margin, a tiny wear spot just under the dateline area, otherwise in very nice condition.
