May 02, 1862
DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, May 2, 1862 Not only is this a nice newspaper from the Confederacy, but it is from the Confederate capital.
Almost the entire last column on the front page is a printing of the significant: "Conscription Act" in the south, with all eleven Articles (see for portions). On page 2 the editor has his typical anti-North comments, but also includes some concerns the South has for the support of England, including: "England becomes grave as the condition of the Confederacy becomes serious. the misfortunes which have befallen us so rapidly...have compelled her statesmen to look the American question squarely in the face..." with more (see for portions). Page 2 also has: "The Latest Northern News--Movements & Spirit of the War..." with various other subheads including: "Affairs at Fort Warren" "Lincoln's Visit to the French Frigate" "The Yankee Army on the Peninsula..." "A Cipher Dispatch from General McClellan" "Iron-Clads for the Yankees" and more.
War reports carry over to page 3, with small heads including: "The Merrimac-Monitor Affair in France" "A Rumor of the Merrimac" "Interesting From Fredericksburg" "Affairs About Norfolk" and other items. One very small, curious item reads: "A negro boy, slave of Samuel P. Hawes, was ordered a thrashing for throwing stones in the street."
The back page includes many Acts of the Confederate Congress, several relating to the war. Complete as a four page issue, never bound nor trimmed, one small tear hold near the spin affecting a ftpg. ad and about 4 words on pg. 2, otherwise in great condition.
