THE MODERATE INTELLIGENCER: Impartially Communicating Martial Affaires to the Kingdome of ENGLAND, May 24, 1649 This newsbook, a predecessor of today's newspaper and published during the English Civil War, supported the abolition of the monarchy and welcomed the beheading of King Charles I. This was somewhat of a transitional item between pamphlets & newspapers, but defined specifically as a periodical by having a set period of issuance, being consecutively numbered, and dated on a regular interval. This is issue #218 of this title.
Being from the English Civil War period it is not surprising that much of the content within is of a military theme. Among the items are: "...great preparations for the new King of Scotland and Ireland, to be gone to sea speedily, & not so much in person as power...". Another item is headed: "Answers to sober queries put to prevent the Expedition into Ireland, which (as since appears) there was no more need of putting to the Souldier than to persuade the people of England against paying Tythes, Taxes, and free Quarter." and another item has: "The letters that came the other night from Carifergus say that the Scots by storm or generall assault have taken London Derry..." (see).
Complete in 12 pages, 5 1/4 by 7 inches, close-trimmed at the bottom of the back leaf only touches the imprint, otherwise in very nice, clean condition.
