THE COUNTRYMAN, Turnwold, Putnam County, Georgia, Nov. 17, 1862
* Very rare Civil War era title
A fascinating little newspaper which perhaps is most famous for being the only newspaper published on a Southern plantation. It was published by Joseph A. Turner on his plantation named “Turnwold” (see the back page notice), some 9 miles from Eatonton and achieved relatively wide readership throughout the Confederates states during the war. He used the “Countryman” to voice his pro-Confederate views as a staunch advocate of slavery.
The entire front page & a bit of page 2 are taken up with: "Educated Negroes" which begins: "There is a law on our statue book forbidding the teaching of negroes to read..." which goes on to express fear that others are attempting to overrule this, with the author's thoughts on the virtues of the law as it stands (see for portions).
Complete in 8 pages 9 by 12 1/4 inches, never bound nor trimmed so it folds out to one large sheet. Some light toning but generally in very nice, clean condition.
