June 26, 1781

THE CONNECTICUT COURANT & WEEKLY INTELLIGENCER, Hartford, June 26, 1781

* Siege of Fort Granby
* Camden SC South Carolina
* Rare Revolutionary War issue

Page 2 has a report on the continental army capturing Fort Granby, South Carolina, signed in type: Henry Lee, Jr. What follows are the: "Articles of Capitulation..." between Lt. Colonel Lee [note: his son was Robert E. Lee] and Major Andrew Maxwell of the British forces (see).
The top of page 3 has: "Extract from General Orders" datelined: "Head-Quarters, New Windsor, 15th June, 1781" which includes: "...Commander in Chief congratulates the army on the success of our arms under Major-General Greene in South Carolina. On the 18th of May, Lord Rawdon, who commanded the post at Camden, was compelled to evacuate it with great precipitation & marks of distress..." with much more (see). Much of the balance of the page has war-related content, with reference to "...the independence of America..." as viewed in Europe (see). Page 2 has a letter signed: Nath. Greene concerning the 2nd Battle of Camden, South Carolina, and other American victories in the Carolinas (see).
A great wealth of fine war content from just a few months before the surrender of Cornwallis would essentially end the Revolutionary War. Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, archivally rejoined at the spine, various mends at folds & margins inside, most archival but 2 are not. A very handsome masthead.
